This month we’re going to focus on getting started building your own themes. Even if you don’t consider yourself a designer or a developer, if you have interest in looking into the code that powers your site and doing your own theming, this is the meetup for you.
David Laietta: The Difference Between PHP/MySQL, HTML & CSS for Themes
We see these terms a lot for the types of code that are used to make a website, but what do they mean? In this session we’ll do an overview of the different types of code that are needed to make a WordPress theme, some ideas on how to get started with them, and some examples of how they work. I’ll demonstrate a basic child theme as well.
Josh Shashaty: Chrome Developer Tools
Now that you’ve got an idea of how themes work, how about seeing how WordPress itself loads up? We’re going to cover the Chrome Debugger and other tools to see how easy it is to start playing around with styles and layout. We’ll also examine browser resource use and load times, so that you can start troubleshooting issues with your site.
